Boundaries in Relationships

Let’s face it, our relationships with others are a huge part of our lives. They bring us joy, support, and a sense of belonging. But, let’s be real, they can also drain us emotionally and mentally.

That’s where boundaries come in – they’re essential to maintaining healthy, fulfilling connections with others while also protecting our own well-being. Though often we’re not taught good boundaries whilst growing up.

What are boundaries?

Think of boundaries like a referee in a game, helping us strike the perfect balance between intimacy and independence. But, how do we know when we need boundaries, and how do we set them?

When do boundaries go wrong for me?

When our desire to belong hurts our mental health, energy, and self-worth, it’s time to set boundaries.

How can I learn to do boundaries?

In counselling, we:

  • Adapt and adjust boundaries as needed
  • Practice boundary-setting
  • Develop a personalised plan
  • Self-reflect on needs, values, and limits
  • Check core beliefs for self-worth
  • Learn to say no and prioritise well-being
  • Practice patience and forgiveness
